In the state of Tamil Nadu, 93 km away from Vellore, there reclines the arcadia famously known as Yelagiri. The town is also known as “Poor Man’s Ooty”. It is a small hill-station located in between Jolarpettai and Vaniyambadi. It is rich in terms of culture and blessed by natural beauty. This hill-station is quite well-known for many decades, since the British colonial days. The hill station is spread over 30 km2. The village of Yelagiri is surrounded by orchards, rose-gardens, and green valleys. There is a story behind this place being named as “Yelagiri”. There was a time; all the area of Yelagiri belonged to the Yelagiri Zamindar family. It was ceased by the government of India during the 1950s. The place is named after their family. The hill station is at a height of 1410.6 m above sea level. This place comprises numbers of temples and 14 hamlets. The thick forest of Yelagiri is also home for numerous animals, especially snakes. This place is classified as a tropical region. There is much rainfall in winter rather than the summer.

Culture

People of Yelagiri are quite simple and are yet not influenced by urbanization. They are very helpful to others as well as to each other too and live in deep harmony and peace. Tamil is the local language around the areas. But people speak Hindi and English as well. The prominent religion in the region is Hinduism. Several other tribal do reside there such as Malayali, Irular. It is also quite famous for its summer festival. Government organized the festival in which all the local eagerly participate. The main aim of the festival is to showcase the rich culture and heritage of the place.

Since it is a popular place for tourists, one does not have to struggle to reach Yelagiri. It is well connected to the roads, although there is no direct train to reach Yelagiri.

The nearest airports from Yelagiri are Kempegowda International Airport, 160km away in Bangalore and Chennai International Airport, 220km away located in Meenambakkam.

How to Reach by Train

Jolarpettai Junction is the nearest railway station located in Vellore district. The other nearest railway station is Kettandapatti located at Thekkupattu, Tamil Nadu.

How to Reach by Bus

Buses are frequently available to reach Yelagiri from many major cities such as Bangalore, Vellore, Chennai, Coimbatore, etc. Yelagiri Hills distance is 228 km away from Chennai, 93 km from Vellore.

How to Reach by Road

Since it is well connected by roads, there is no problem in reaching to Yelagiri by road. The town is connected with NH48. You can reach Yelagiri from Vellore in 2 Hours approximately.

How to travel within

Many local cabs or autos are available within the town. The town is not very large, so one can travel on foot too.

As it is in deep parts of Tamil Nadu, you will find South Indian touch food in nearby areas. You will find several dishes of coconut and rice. Jackfruit is the specialty of this area. “Paysam” and “Jangiri” are the famous sweet dishes you will find. Yelagiri Itinerary

Day 1

Starting your journey early in the morning, catch a flight from Mumbai airport to Chennai. The flight will be of 2 hours approximately. After reaching Chennai, with public transport or by bus or taxi, reach Yelagiri. You can reach in the evening. Get a hotel or motel to stay and take rest for a while. After taking rest you can head to the Nature Park. Spend some nice time there and then head back to the hotel.

Day 2

Starting Early in the morning after having a delicious breakfast, you can go to Velavan Temple and pay your respects and then head to the Jalagamparia waterfall. After having exhausting trek you can take bath in the waterfall. The next destination would be Nilavoor lake and spend peaceful time there and in evening head back to the hotel. Take rest and have dinner. After having dinner you can go to Murugan Temple and pay your respects. Have a good night sleep in cold weather.

Day 3

Gearing up in the early morning after having breakfast, one should be ready for an adventurous trek on the hills of Swami Malai hills. After long trek head to Punganur Lake and at rest for a while. After a long and exhausting day head back to the hotel and take rest.

Day 4

Start your venture after having breakfast in Yelagiri Adventure Camp. Have fun whole day by doing lot many activities and adventures. In evening head back to hotel and take rest for tomorrow.

Day 5

Start your journey back to Mumbai. Get a bus to Chennai and flight from Chennai airport to Mumbai Airport. You will reach by evening.
