Wayanad Tourism

Wayanad is a district in the north-east of the state of Kerala. The beautiful hill station was formed by carving out certain areas from the Kozhikode and Kunnur districts on 1st November, 1980. It can also be called the green paradise of Kerala, which is located among the mountainous plateau of the Western Ghats. The hill station covers an area of 823 sq mi, out of which 885.92 sq km is under forest. The district has three municipal towns, Kalpetta, Mananthavady and Sulthan Bathery. The name of the place has been derived from the word ‘Vayal Nadu’ which means the land of paddy fields. The district has several indigenous tribes like Adiyan, Kattuniakkan, also known as Jenu Kurumban and Ten Kurumban, Kurichyan, Mullukkurman, Paniyan, Thachaanadan Mooppan, Vettakkuruman and Wayanad Kadar. Some of the major cities and towns of the district are Kalpetta, it is the capital of the district, Sulthan Bathery, Mananthavady, Meenangadi, Pulpally, Panamaram and Muttil. Franky’s narrow-mouthed frog was discovered recently in the district of Wayanad. The main economy of the district is based on agriculture; most of the population is engaged in agriculture and most of the land is used for agricultural purposes. The main agricultural products of the district are coffee, tea, cocoa, pepper, vanilla, rice, coconut, cardamom, tea, ginger etc and thus these are the things which should be tried by tourists when visiting Wayanad. The district’s economy is also based on cattle farming and tourism. Tourists can stay at tree houses and mud houses to get the feel of South India and also to get the thrill of the jungles. Tourists can also go for trekking in the beautiful mountains which provides a pleasant view. For trekking, there are several option like a trek to the Chembra Peak or the Banasura Hills, for those who like peaceful and quiet places this hill is away from the crowd and the chaos. There are other options like a trek to the Edakkal Caves, Pakshipathalam, Brahmagiri, Thusharagiri, Kalladi Forest and Thirunelli. Camping in the hills of Wayanad, surrounded by the dense forest with a campfire in the night and rising with a beautiful sunrise in the morning, is like living a dream and tourists should indulge in such an experience.

Wayanad cuisine has a mixture of rich and authentic flavours of Kerala cuisine. Certain very popular dishes are Chemmeen Unda Puttu, prawn dumplings which is a very healthy and traditional dish of Kerala. It has prawn fillings inside cakes made of coconut and steamed rice. Puttu and beef fry is also very popular. This dish involves fried beef along with puttu, which is a kind of steamed rice. Kadala Curry is also another traditional dish, which is made up of black chickpeas and is served with appam and puttu. It is a spicy dish of the state. Malabar Biriyani, also known as Thalassery Biriyani, is a rice based dish made with chicken and spices. Roasted duck cooked in rich gravy with a lot of spices, known as Malabar Duck Roast, is another popular dish. Kilikoodu is a snack mainly prepared during the Ramzan. Sadya is a dish served on banana leaf which has a variety of vegetarian dishes. Chatti Pathiri, Mutta Mala, Pazham Nirachathu, Unnakaya are some of the options for snacks and the sweet tooth.

How to reach

Wayanad does not have an airport of its own; it does not have a railway station. However the place is well connected major cities of South India.

How to Reach by Flight

Wayanad does not have an airport of its own. The nearest airport is Calicut International Airport that is the Kozhikode Airport, which is located at a distance of around 61 km away from the place. There are taxi and bus services available outside the airport.

How to Reach by Train

The place does not have a railway station of its own. The nearest railway station is Nilambur Railway Station, which is situated at a distance of around 90 km from Wayanad. However, the bigger and mostly used railway station is at Kozhikode, which is located at a distance of around 110 km. Cab services as well as buses are available from the railway station to reach Wayanad.

How to Reach by Bus

State-run buses as well as those owned by private agencies are available from major cities like Bangalore, Mysore, Kochi, Chennai and several other places. There are also buses directly from these cities to Wayanad. 

How to Reach by Road

Wayanad is well connected by roads to several major cities. The distance of the place from Bangalore is around 280 km and takes 6 hours. The distance of Mysore is around 130 km and takes around 3 hours. From Chennai, it is at a distance of around 620 km and will take around 12 hours.  

How to travel within

The best way to travel from one place to another inside the city is by taking autos, public and private buses, rickshaws and taxis. Certain hotels and resorts also provide the tourists with car rentals.


There are several festivals celebrated in Wayanad. Karthigai is a light festival in which the temple of the villages arrange for a bonfire and the members of each house takes a burning torch made up of palm leaves to their homes. There are oil lights lit in all the houses in the village and it looks beautiful and radiant. In the month of February- March the festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated in almost all Hindu states. This festival is celebrated on the day Lord Shiva drank the deadly poison to save the world from destruction. On this day, people visit various Shiv temples to offer their prayers. Thirunelli festival is a two day festival celebrated in the month of April and is dedicated to Sree Thirunelli Devaswom at Thirunelli in Wayanad. Ritual offerings of this festival are made on a rock for the ancestors on the new moon day. Asthami Rohini is the birthday of Lord Krishna and is celebrated in the month of August- September Bakri Id is also celebrated in Wayanad. It commemorates the sacrifice of Ibrahim obeying God’s orders. It is a very important festival for the Muslims in Kerala and rich people sacrifice goats on this day and share it with friends, relatives and even poor people. Apart from these festivals, Wayanad also celebrates festivals like Easter, Christmas, Valliyurkavu Bhagavathy Temple festival, celebrated in the month of February, Seethadevi Temple festival, celebrated in January, Pallikkunnu Church festival, celebrated in February, and Nadavayal St.Thomas Church festival, celebrated in the month of January.

Wayanad Itinerary

Day 1- After reaching the airport, proceed towards the hotel at Wayanad. After that, leave for Banasura Dam, Soochipara Falls and Edakkal Caves.

Day 2- After breakfast leave for Chembra Peak and Kuruva Dweep. Then go for shopping or rest at the hotel.

Day 3- After breakfast leave for Pookot Lake and the visit the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
