Varkala Tourism

Varkala is an emerging tourist destination along the coast of Kerala. It has been developed as a major tourist destination in recent years. Varkala is quite calm except for the peak season which is around December. The beach extends around the cliff for about 500 meters. 


Varkala cultural center organizes evening shows of traditional dance Kathakali. Entry fee might be applicable.

Numerous centers offer Ayurvedic massage, but watch out for frauds.

There are yoga centers near beaches which offer rooms along with yoga classes.

How to reach

Varkala is connected with major cities in Kerala by road. The nearest airport is Trivandrum ( Thiruvananthapuram ) which is at a distance of 50km (it will take about 1-1.5 hours to cover). Varkala has its own railway stations and most of the trains stop here. Auto rickshaws or taxis can be hired from railway station, it will cost about Rs50-100.

How to Reach by Flight

Thiruvananthapuram (TRV) is the nearest airport. It will take about 1-1.5 hours to reach Varkala by taxi. The airport is well connected with all major cities in India.

How to Reach by Train

Varkala Railway Station (VAK) is just 10 minutes away from beaches by taxi. Most of the trains towards Trivandrum from north Kerala stops here. Auto rickshaws are recommended as they are cheap and readily available at railway station.

Kerala RTC operates buses between Varkala and various cities in Kerala.

How to Reach by Road

Varkala is at a distance of 50km from Thiruvananthapuram.State highways connect Varkala with major cities in Kerala.

Where to eat

There may not be many fancy restaurants but during the season there will be a number f temporary restaurants near the cliff.

Varkala Itinerary

Day1 : Reach Varkala early in the morning and explore the Varkala beach followed by a visit to Sivagiri Matt. Visit the famous temples of Varkala in the evening.
