Vishwanath Temple

#1 of 6 things to do in Uttarkashi

Located on the banks of river Bhagirathi, downtown, the temple is one of the oldest and sacred temples of Uttarkashi. The temple offers spectacular views to the banks of the river and the surrounding mountainous terrain. Situated less than a kilometre from the main town, this is one of the most important shrines and shouldn’t be missed out once you are travelling to Uttarkashi.  The temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is said to have been initially built by Sage Parshuram and later renovated by Maharani Khaneti, wife of Sudharshan Shah in 1857. Inside the temple, you can see the 56 cm tall Shivalingam with a tilt towards the south along with Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesh in the Sanctum Santorum. There are several other temples in the Vishwanath temple complex with the most prominent being the Shakti temple which is situated opposite the temple of Lord Vishwanath. Every evening a grand sandhya-arati is performed ceremoniously to Lord Vishwanath amidst the chanting of the sacred hymns, it is one of the most sacred sights you can experience once in Uttarkashi.
