Tehri Dam is one of the highest dams in the world and is the highest in India. The dam is owned by THDC India Ltd and is an earth and rock-filled embankment dam which is a multi-purpose rock. It is built on the Bhagirathi River in Tehri. The construction of the dam began in 1978 and was finally completed in 2006. The height of the dam is 260.5 m and the length is 575 m and the total capacity of water which can be stored in the reservoir is 3,200,000 acre-ft is used to irrigation, municipal water supply and generation of 1,000 megawatts of hydroelectricity. The dam, however, has faced several objections and protests from environmental organizations and local people. An Anti-Tehri Dam movement was led by Sunderlal Bahugana, who protested against the displacement of town inhabitants and the environmental consequences that the dam has. This dam however provides clean drinking water to almost 40 lakh people in Delhi and also leads to less flooding in low lying areas like West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. It is also an important tourist destination as it provides a mesmerizing scenic beauty. There are also activities for tourists like jet skiing, water zorbing and rafting.
