The temple is surrounded by dense forest and provides a view of the Himalayas in the north and also a view of Rishikesh, Dehradun and other cities in the south. One of the most popular festivals of the temple is the Ganga Dusshera Festival, celebrated in the month of May or June. The mythological belief that revolves around the temple is that Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva and the daughter of Daksha, threw herself in the fire of the grand Vedic sacrifice performed by her father for all the deities as he was unhappy with his daughter’s choice and did not invite Shiva or Sati. However, being all-powerful Goddess, Sati was reborn as Parvati but grief stricken Shiva took the body and started tandava. In order to stop him, Vishnu destroyed Sati’s corpse and the pieces fell on earth. It was believed that Sati’s head at the place where the Surkanda Devi Temple is located.
