Tehri Garhwal is a district in the state of Uttarakhand. It is one of the largest districts in the state, which is mostly covered with hills. The term ‘Tehri’ has been derived from the word Trihari,which means the place that washes away all the three types of sins. The three sins are, sins born out of Mansa, or thought, sins born out of Vacha, or word, sins born out of Karmana, or deed. The word ‘Garh’ refers to fort. Certain major towns of the district are Kanha, Chamba, Ghansali, Deoprayag, Ghuttu, Bhatwara etc. The region is one of the most backward districts and receives funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme. Tourists can enjoy certain specific fruits and spices that grow in this district particularly. The district has several temples and this place of religious importance. New Tehri is the only well planned town of the state of Uttarakhand, and the Old Tehri, which used to be heavily populated, now is in ruins. The district is also known for several activities like water sports, skiing, rafting, hiking, trekking, canoeing etc. However the main attraction of the district is the Tehri dam, which is the world’s largest hydroelectric project which harnesses the water of the two very important rivers of the Himalayas, Bhagirathi and Bhailangana. Tehri is considered to be a nature’s paradise, it receives snowfall in winters and has several snow covered peaks and thus attracts several tourists from all over the country as well as the world. The food of Garhwal includes jhakiya flavoured raita, makki ki roti, dhaniya chutney, which is often flavoured by local spices, nettle is a kind of a popular saag eaten by the locals only after boiling it in hot water, and the local people also use several edible flowers in the salads. People in Tehri Garhwal generally eat stuffed roti, known as gahat ki roti, in the morning. Gahat is a popular local pulse of the region. The hill station celebrates the Chandrabadni Fair every year in April. This fair takes place in the Chandrabadni temple, which is located at a distance of around 8 km from Tehri. A large number of people come to attend the fair from all over the country and visit the shrine. There are several religious and cultural performances that are held in this fair. The Surkhanda Devi Fair takes place in another Siddha Peeths of Uttarakhand, known as Surkhanda Devi Temple. It is located at a distance of around 33 km from Mussoorie and the fair’s main attraction is the worship of Goddess Durga as to temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga. There are traditional handicrafts along with folk music and dance. Another fair known as Kunjapuri Fair is organised every year in October in Narendra Nagar at the Kunjapuri Temple. This fair is attended by several people as it occurs in a close proximity of Rishikesh and displays traditional handicrafts and articles which are handmade. The people of the region also celebrates several festivals like Basant Panchami, celebrated in the month of January/February where people dress up in yellow clothes and fly kites, Holi, the festival of colours is celebrated almost all throughout the country of India. Other festivals like Makar Sankranti, Ghughutia, Phool Dei, Bat Savitri are some of the festivals of the state.
Tehri Garhwal Itinerary
Day 1- After reaching the airport, proceed towards Tehri Garhwal. After that leave for Tehri Dam and ten visit Devprayag. Then spend the rest of the day shopping in Tehri.
Day 2- After breakfast leave for River Rafting and Rock Climbing. Then you can go for trekking and spend the night at a camp.
Day 3- Leave for Mussoorie early morning from the camp. After sightseeing in mussoorie, then leave for Dhanaulti and stay for the night.
Day 4- After breakfast leave for sightseeing in Dhanaulti and then go to Chamba. Visit Surkanda Devi and then go to Kanatal.
Day 5- After breakfast go for Kanatal sightseeing and then go to Narendranagar.
