Tarapith is a tiny hamlet of Sahapur Gram Panchayet, Margram Police Station found on the banks of River Dwarka in the state of West Bengal. It is settled in the flood plains amongst the green paddy fields. It resembles a typical Bengali settlement with thatched shelter huts and fish tanks. The village is placed 6 km from Rampurhat Sub-Division in the Birbhum district. Tarapith is known for its The Tantric Hindu Temple is devoted to the goddess Tara, a fearful Tantric appearance of the Devi. The temple is the principal temples of Shaktism. Tarapith acquires its title after the Devi, it is the most prestigious centre of Tara preaching and her cult. Tarapith is also famous for Sadhak Bamakhepa, popularly known as "mad saint", who prayed in the temple and lodged here as well. He was well-known as a mendicant and was trained and perfected in Yoga and the tantric skills under the tutorship of another important saint, Kailash Pati Baba. Tarapith is visited by a countless number of followers throughout the year.

There are numerous fables attached to the beginning and significance of this area, solely associated with the goddess Tara revered in the Tarapith temple. A popular myth pertains to the Shakti Piths. Sati, the consort of Lord Shiva, felt humiliated when her father Daksha did not summon Shiva to the royal Yajna "fire sacrifice" he planned. Unable to bear this embarrassment, Sati gave up her life by hopping into the fire. Provoked by this shocking turn of events, Shiva went erratic. Then, Lord Vishnu in order to appease Shiva decimated the body of Sati with his Chakra. Sati's body part fell all over various Indian states. The spots where the body parts dropped have become hubs of the devotion of the Goddess in diverse demonstrations. There are 51 such holy temples which are named Shakti Piths; in West Bengal, there are many such Piths, such as the Kalighat. There are many other mystical stories which are related to this town.
