Sringeri Tourism

Snuggled on the banks of river Tunga, Sringeri also named Sri Kshetra Shringeri is a hill town positioned in Chikkamagluru district in the state of Karnataka. The place is home to of the very initial Matha called Sringeri Sharada Peetha. The Matha was installed by Adi Shankara who was a prominent Hindu theologian and exponent of the Advaita Vedanta theory, in the 8th century C.E. It is located on the banks of the river Tunga. The title Sringeri is obtained from Rishyashringa-Giri which is a prominent hill which is located close to the place, it is believed to have embraced the heritage of Rishi-Vibhandaka and his son Rishayashringa. Sringeri is home to plenty of well-known temples. Of these, Sri Sharadamba Temple and Sri Vidyashankara temple are very pre-eminent. Other celebrated temples nearby are situated in Hornadu and Kollur. Sringeri is an ideal paradisiacal weekend getaway for the people residing in Bangalore and nearby places. The architectural beauty that radiates in the temples and monuments here lures people from all over the world.

TOWN'S HISTORY AND POPULAR FOLKTALES

According to folktales, Sankaracharya settled and preached in Sringeri. It is further said that once when he was strolling by the Tunga river, he noticed a cobra with an elevated hood, granting shade from the scorching sun to a toad about to produce. Overwhelmed with the spot where natural opponents had gone ahead of their drives, he decided to stay here itself. He lived here for 12 years. The famous temples in the area are a masterpiece of architecture and trace their history to many centuries ago. 

How to reach

One can reach Sringeri via flights, trains and roadways as well. However, if you're looking for a hassle-free comfortable ride then travelling to Sringeri must be done by roads.

How to Reach by Flight

The nearest airport is located in Mangalore International Airport at Mangalore. One can take a taxi from there to reach the destination. 

How to Reach by Train

Chikkamagaluru district is linked to Bengaluru and other cities through rail line via Kadur. 

 

How to Reach by Bus

KSRTC offers both AC and Non AC luxury buses from Bengaluru. Other private travel buses also operate buses from Bengaluru. Sringeri is situated at a distance of 86 kilometres from Chikamaglur by road.

One can rent a cab or a taxi to reach here. The place is connected to major cities in the state via roadways.

FOOD: There are not many places to dine out in Sringeri. Nevertheless, the handful of places which are there offer delectable south Indian cuisine. The outlets serve both local as well as other popular food. However, what essentially stands out in the town's menu is it's outstanding inherited sweet called Sringeri Halwa which one can never afford to miss, while here. Other than this you may encounter local delicacies like Dosa, Bisi Bele Bath, Akki Roti, Jolada Roti, Idli, Vada, Sambhar, KesariBath, Ragi Mudde, Uppittu, Vangi Bath and traditional and local sweets like Mysore Pak, Chiroti and many more.

STAY/ HOTELS: Hotel Sringeri residency, Hedge residency, Hotel Advaith Lancer, Subodhaya Lodge, Kanaka Heritage etc. offer comfortable and very easy on pocket stay

AVAILABILITY OF ATMs: Karnataka bank, Indian Overseas Bank, SBI, Syndicate Bank, Corporation Bank etc operate in the region. However, it is prudent to withdraw cash from Bangaluru or nearby places. 

Sringeri Itinerary

ONE DAY ITINERARY

Reach early and check into a hotel. After taking some refreshments, head towards the Torana Ganpati temple. After that visit the Sarada Temple. After that leave for Sringeri Mutt. After that grab something to eat for lunch. Later, Visit Horanadu village, and visit the temples there. Return in the evening to Sringeri and do some shopping for your friends and family. Stay in the hotels for the night and leave in the evening.
