The breath-taking man-made reservoir located at a distance of 15kms to the north of Shillong, the Umaim Lake is surrounded by thick coniferous forests and expands over an area of 222 kms. Surrounded by verdant East Khasi hills, with its charm and serenity attracts tourists from all over the world. The park adjoining the lake, with its beautifully maintained garden, is an excellent spot for picnics. The lake offers a magnificent scenery to the onlooker. One can enjoy the beauty of the lake, engage deep into its beauty to clear their minds and relax their bodies. In summers, the shores of the lake are adorned by beautiful Gulmohar trees and in winters the crystal blue water of the lake simply amazes you. Loved equally by both children and adults, locals and tourists, the visitors can take a long boat ride in the lake, and adventure lovers can enjoy boating and various water-sports.

Umaim Lakehouse

Umiam Lake is famous for its lovely little Boat House by a lake island, the Lumpongden Island. Only one group of people (a maximum of 6 numbers) are allowed to stay here at a time, hence its advisable for you to book the place in advance. The Boat House rent is around INR 3500, including cooking and tips (excluding the cost of supplies). With care takes to do the cooking and the rest, you can just sit and relax and enjoy the scenic beauty.

Boating at Umaim Lake

A leisure boat ride with the sight of the serene waters of the reservoir, the lush green forests that surround the lake under the azure of the skies is breath-taking.

Water Sports

If you are in for an adventure, then water sports in Umaim lake is an excellent opportunity for you. There are provisions for Solo boating, Angling, Kayaking and Water Skiing.


The enormous lake has a variety of fishes like carpes and catfishes. If you are someone who enjoys fishing, you can spend your leisure time here.

Trekking and Camping.

This is yet another exciting adventure once you are in Umaim Lake. If you want to do trekking seriously, you can trek through the dense forests and camp at the Lumpongden Island which is an isolated piece of land in the reservoir. But always make sure to carry the necessary supplies along with you.
