#11 of 17 things to do in Shillong

Situated towards the outskirts of Shillong, the Sohpetbneng Peak is a steep mountain, a place of worship to the Khasis of indigenous religion. Surrounded by the verdant landscape and the beautiful Umiam Lake along the valley, the Sohpetbneng is known to be the navel to the heaven. According to the legend, located on top of this hill is a golden ladder connecting heaven and earth. It is said that this connection was severed in accordance with the divine decree. Once a year, in the month of February the Khasi people gather here to conduct rites and rituals and offer prayers. With the towering height of 343 m, the peak offers beautiful, breath-taking panoramic views relaxing one’s mind and soul.
