Sattal Tourism

Sattal, also known as Sat Tal, is a group of seven freshwater lakes that are interconnected and are located in the state of Uttarakhand in the district of Nainital and is located near Bhimtal. The word means “seven lakes” in Hindi. The interconnected freshwater lake is surrounded by different kinds of lush green trees like oak and pine and attracts a large number of migratory birds. The place remains thronged with tourists almost throughout the year; however, monsoons are not a preferable time to visit this area as it is prone to landslides. The lake has been protected by the locals and they have been successful in preventing the lake from getting polluted and have been able to maintain its beauty. The seven lakes that form the Sattal are Panna Tal or the Garud Tal, Nal-Damyanti Tal, Purna Tal, Sita Tal, Ram Tal, Laxman Tal, and Sukha Tal or Khurdariya Tal. Major tourist attractions around the lake are the town of Bhimtal, Bhowali, Naukuchia Tal, Ghorakhal, Golu Devata Temple, Nainital, butterfly museum, Subhash Dhara, Sattal Mission Estate and Methodist Ashram and Kayaking. Boating, fishing, trekking and bird watching are some of the activities that are organized for the locals as well as the tourists who visit the seven lakes. The weather of the place is pleasant almost throughout the year and it forms a photographer’s paradise. It is a true example of a paradise located amidst nature’s bounty, away from the crowd and chaos of the cities. It is a perfect holiday destination or can be visited as a part of a short trip by the people living in the cities of Uttarakhand or the nearby states.

Flora and Fauna of the Lake

It is a paradise of around 500 species of birds like red-billed blue magpie, kingfishers, golden-throated barbet, brown-headed barbets, babblers, tits, thrush, pied woodpecker, Himalayan woodpecker, dollar birds, leaf birds, purple sunbird, flowerpecker, laughing thrush, lemon-rumped warblers, common kingfisher, crimson-fronted barbet, lammergeier, Indian tree pies, Kokla pheasants, flycatchers, cheer pheasants, rufous babbler, and many more. It also has around 20 species of mammals, 525 species of butterflies like Indian fritillary, peacock, panzy, blue peacock, Paris peacock, red Helen, large SilverStripe, Indian oakleaf, etc. Different types of fishes include Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala, Catla catla, Schizothorax richardsonii, etc and around 11000 species of moths, beetles, bugs and other kinds of insects. It also provides its tourists with a wide range of plant species like Bryophytes orchids, rare climbing plants, ferns, lichens, fungi, herbs and shrubs that have medicine value, etc.

How to reach

Sattal does not have an airport or a railway station of its own. There are also no bus stands nearby, however it is connected to nearby cities of Uttarakhand as it is one of the major attractions of the tourists.

How to Reach by Flight

Sattal does not have an airport of its own. The nearest airport is Patnagar Airport, which is located at a distance of around 61 km from the lakes. There is however taxi services available from the airport to Sattal which helps the tourists to commute.

How to Reach by Train

Sattal does not have a railway station of its own. The nearest railway station is Kathgodam Railway station. There are bus as well as taxi services available from the railway station.

How to Reach by Bus

Sattal does not have a bus stand either, so taking is a bus is feasible only if one can travel to Nainital or other nearby cities by bus and then take cab services to the lake. 

How to Reach by Road

There are interstate bus services available which can be availed by people who are planning to take a road trip to Sattal. Others can also take their cars or book a cab.

How to travel within

The area is visited by a large number of tourists and therefore cab services are continuously available to commute from one place to the other.

Day 3- After breakfast leave for Bhimtal. After returning to the hotel, rest for the evening.

Day 4- After breakfast leave for Nainital.
