Chaukhandi Stupa

#4 of 5 things to do in Sarnath

What soul is to body, is Chaukhandi Stupa to Buddhism. This was a terraced temple later converted into a stupa. It holds a lot of importance in history as this is the very place where Lord Buddha met his disciples while travelling from Bodh Gaya to Sarnath. This place holds utmost importance as it marked the very sacred and divine beginning of the new religion called Buddhism which aimed to spread peace in the world. While there were already many religions existing, this religion in particular gained prominence as well as a lot of followers as it promoted peace and happiness. A lot of people who had seen wars and lost their loved ones, could relate to Lord Buddha's teachings and decided to follow him.

Later the stupa was modified to its present shape by building the octagonal tower to commemorate the visit of Humayun by a local king.

Chaukhandi Stupa is around 8 kilometres from Cantt Railway Station, Varanasi in UP.
