Rameswaram is a city in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is located in the district of Ramanathapuram district. The city is on the Pamban Island, in the Gulf of Mannar, located at the tip of the Indian Peninsula. It is separated from the land of India by the Pamban channel and the Pamban Bridge and is at a distance of around 40 km from Sri Lanka. It is a part of the Char Dham pilgrimage in India and is one of the holiest places in India for Hindus. It has a population of 44,856. It is belived that God Rama built a bridge from the city to Sri Lanka to rescue his wife, Sita, from Ravana. The main economy of the city is based on tourism related services. Being an island town, fishing is also an important occupation of the city. Rameswara means “one who is lord of Rama”. It is believed that the on the advice of the sages, Lord Rama, his wife, Sita, and his brother, Lakshmana installed and worshipped the lingam, symbol of Lord Shiva. From Vedas and Puranas, it can be found that Rameswaram was named as “Gandhamadhanam” in the ancient time and it is believed that there was a Shiva temple even before Rama installed Shiva lingam for worshipping Lord Shiva. The city, inspite of being a temple town, has a variety of shopping options for all the shopaholics. Beach side shacks, sea shell marts, souvenirs, local art and handicrafts, including statues, framed photographs of Gods and Goddesses, brass figurines, brass lamps, and bronze artefacts are all found in the city. The place is also well known for its silk saris and Khadi fabrics.

These dishes are mostly vegetarian and have 12-13 dishes in it. In the non-vegetarian section, a variety of seafood is largely popular. Rameswaram does not have an airport of its own; however it has a railway station. The city is well connected to other parts of the country by road.
Rameswaram does not have an airport of its own. The nearest airport is at Madurai, which is located at a distance of around 174 km from Rameswaram. This connects the city to other major cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, and Mumbai etc. Taxi services are available outside the airport.
Rameswaram has its own railway station, Rameswaram Railway Station. Trains from major cities like Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Thanjavur halt at the station. Taxi services are available outside the station.
Rameswaram is connected by buses owned by Tamil Nadu Road Transport Corporation and by Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation ply to and fro from cities like Chennai, Kanyakumari, Madurai, Tirupati etc. There are also bus services by those owned by private agencies.
The city is also well connected to the southern states of India by road. Chennai is located at a distance of around 560 km from Rameswaram and will take around 10 hours to reach. Kanyakumari is at a distance of around 310 km and will take around 5 hours by car. Coimbatore is around 380 km and it will take around 8 hours by car.
The best mode of transport inside the city is a car or an auto or a cab. Walking is also a good option in the city.
There are several Hindu festivals which are celebrated in the city of Rameswaram. Mahashivratri is the most important festival of the city. The festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is celebrated for ten days in the city in the month of February- March with several rituals and processions, cars of Shiva, Parvati and their consorts are pulled on the streets. Vasantautsavam is another festival which is the spring festival celebrated for ten days in the month of May- June. In this festival, The deity in the temple is worshipped. Ramalinga Pratishtha is celebrated in the month of May- June when the idols of Lord Ramanathaswamy and Lord Rama is worshipped. Thirukalyanam is another festival celebrated in the month of July- August for seventeen days in the Ramanasthaswamy Temple. Navaratri and Dussehra is also celebrated where nine forms of Goddess Durga is worshipped.
Day 1- After reaching Rameswaram Railway Station, go to the hotel. Then after breakfast proceed towards the Agnitheertham, Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge and the Dhanushkodi Temple and Beach.
Day 2- After breakfast leave for Gandhamadhana Parvatham. Then visit the Kothandaramaswamy Temple and Jada Tirtham. In the evening, during sunset, go for Glass Boat Ride at Pamban Bridge.
Day 3- After breakfast leave for Lakshmana Tirtham, Jatayu Tirtham, Rameshwaram Temple and the Five-faced Hanuman Temple.
