One of the most magnificent districts in West Bengal, Purulia has a vibrant history and legacy to brag of. Encompassed by Bankura, Midnapore and Burdwan districts of West Bengal and some districts of Jharkhand state, the area has encountered a number of changes over the several years of its life. According to the Jaina Bhagavati-Sutra, Purulia has been surviving since the 5th century and was one of the 16 Mahajanapadas of its age. It is considered that Purulia was a part of the motherland known as Vajra-bhumi, in early times. However, not much is known about the pre-historic era of Purulia. Purulia achieved significance in 1765, in the British era when British East-India Company obtained the 'Diwani' of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa.
