The Famous shiv temple in Puri, the Markandesvara Temple, also goes by the names, Markandeswara Mahadeva Temple, and Markandeya Shiva Temple. It was constructed by Sage Markandeya. According to history, the story goes as this being the exact spot where God saved the sage where he remained in meditation for a long time. There are stone inscriptions in the temple and the tank which reveals a great deal about the history Ganga dynasty dating back to the 12th century AD. The entrance of the temple is adorned with a figure of Nataraja with ten arms and the corners of the temple have shrines of Lord Shiva in different avatars.
