 Popularly known as the Villianur Temple, at a distance of 11 km from Pondicherry, is the very famous Gokilambal Thirukameswarar Temple. This temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, was constructed by a Chola king in the 12th century and one can see the French influence over the temple through their varied traditions. During the Brahmotsavam, which is basically the annual festival of Pondicherry, a 15 meters tall temple chariot is taken out for a procession. This is also known as the car festival, which is celebrated for ten days in the month of May to June. The temple has several beautiful pillars with carved images on it and two majestic towers, fashionably designed and sculptured making it a tourist attraction.
