Nilgiri Mountain Railway

#1 of 11 things to do in Ooty

Nilgiri mountain railway also known as the Cog railway is a UNESCO world heritage site in Ooty, it was started in 1899 and initially was completed in 1908. The place is actually the highlight in Ooty and is visited by people from all over the globe every month, The rail runs from Mettupalyam to Ooty, via Conoor, the sparkling train pulls blue and creamish color bogis( carriages) with big windows and it looks totally stunning. It was actually established by the British, as Ooty was a summer getaway for the Chennai Government and they needed a cheap and convenient way of travelling to this picturesque hill station, so they decided to start this fancy railway system. Another amazing fact is that it is the only meter gauge, rack railway in the Country. The train used to run on vintage coal fired steam engines but recently they have been replaced with the new oil fired steam engines. The railway system has a middle rail fitted with a rack that engages a pinion on steam engines. Resulting in better traction for the train to go up easily on the steep hills. From 2018 onwards the steam engine has been improvised with a diesel engine on the ride between Conoor and Ooty. Do not forget to take this adventurous ride in tranquil hill of this beautiful city. You can book your tickets on IRCTC website to enjoy this wonderful journey.
