Maitreya Buddha

#2 of 5 things to do in Nubra valley

Located close to the Diskit religious monastery, stands a 32-meter tall statue of Maitreya Buddha looking towards the Shyok River. Roosted on a hillock, Maitreya Buddha was built in 2006 remembering three goals that are - protection of Diskit Village, prevention of further war with Pakistan and to advance world harmony. The statue was inaugurated by H.H Dalai Lama in 2010. The beautiful pictures that are commonly known in the locality as Jampa is mounted on a huge lobby that has preserved a colossal drum and a collection of statues along with Buddhist writings. One can see statues of Shakyamuni Buddha and Guru Rimpoche inside the lobby.
