North Sikkim Tourism

Nestled into the northern part of Sikkim, at an altitude of 610 m, the northern Sikkim is one of the most uninhabited areas of the country. The extremely charming North Sikkim with its mountainous landscape with lush green vegetation all the way up to the alpine altitude then thinning out to desert towards northern tundra. Considered as one of the least explored areas within the country due to its harsh weather conditions, North Sikkim is a picturesque beauty sharing its boundary with China and Nepal. Most of the North Sikkim is restricted to travellers and you will need permits to visit these areas as they share a sensitive border with China. Home to the Red Panda, a vulnerable species, Northern Sikkim with its numerous waterfalls along the main roads, makes the trip exceptionally amazing. Located at 600m from the capital of North Sikkim, Mangan serves as the base for trekking and hiking in the mountains. One of the major attractions of North Sikkim is the Kanchenjunga is the highest peak at over 8,000 m, straddling its western border with Nepal and can be seen clearly from the town of Singhik. Rest of the tourist attractions include famous lakes like Gurudongmar Lake and some monasteries Phensang Monastery and Lachen Monastery.

How to reach

North-Sikkim is not very conveniently linked to other cities and towns. You can find shared jeeps, buses and taxis to travel from Bagdogra to North-Sikkim.

How to Reach by Flight

North-Sikkim does not have its own airport. The nearest airport is located at Bagdogra which is nearly 125 km away.

How to Reach by Train

North-Sikkim does not have its own railway station. Major railway heads near Gangtok are New Jalpaiguri(188 Km) and Siliguri (145 Km).

How to Reach by Bus

There are frequent public and private bus services connecting Sikkim with other neighbouring towns and cities.

How to Reach by Road

National Highway 31A is the most functional national highway in Sikkim. You can find shared jeeps and taxis to travel to North-Sikkim.

How to travel within

Taxis can be used to travel within North Sikkim. Trekking is also an advisable option.

Local Cuisine

The local delicacies of North Sikkim include Momos and a variety of Thukpa. You can also try several fermented foods like Gundruk and Sinki, Chhurpi soup, Tama curry and Masauyra Curry.

North Sikkim Itinerary

Day 1:

Start Early from Gangtok to Lachen. The drive can take around 5 hours. After the breakfast, proceed to explore Lachen and the monastery. Spent the night in Lachen.

Day 2:

Early morning drive to Thangu village and further to Chopta valley. Drive further to Lachung via Chungthang. En route visit Chungthang confluence of Lachen Chu and Lachun Chu and Vimnala Water Falls. Spent the night in Lachung.

Day 3:

Start early morning drive to Yumthang valley. After lunch visit the Handicraft Centre & Lachung Monastery. Later drive back to Gangtok, In the evening arrive at Gangtok. Overnight stay at Gangtok.
