HISTORY: GURU NANAK DEV AND HIS PIOUS FAITH IN SIKHISM
Gurudwara Sri Nanakmatta Sahib is closely connected to the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev who travelled there during his third Udasi in 1514, in which he progressed to Mount Kailash. At that point of time, Gurdwara Sri Nanakmatta Sahib was the home of the adherents of Guru Gorakhnath and it was denominated "Gorakhmata". When Guru Nanak first reached here, the yogis entertained him with dignified kindness and welcomed Guru Nanak to foster their religion, wear their garb and join them as a yogi. Guru Nanak revealed to them that a life of solitude, which does not benefit other beings, was empty. Guru Nanak rested close to the contemporary spot of the Gurdwara meditating under a Pipal tree. The yogis were astonished to observe him there since this site was pretty inconvenient, notably during the winters. The weather being cold, Bhai Mardana urged the yogis for assistance in producing a fire. However, they denied helping Bhai Mardana. The yogis, rather, ridiculed him and told him that he should go and request his Guru. At this, Guru Nanak glanced at a heap of firewood nearby and it immediately enkindled. Bhai Mardana was thus capable to stay heated and appreciate the fire. Swiftly, the weather alternated for the worse and it started to rain. As an outcome, the fires lit by the yogis were extinguished but the one lit by Guru Ji was not affected at all. The yogis understood their blunder and fell at the feet of the Guru. Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji also toured Nanakmatta.
