Mysore ( also known as Mysuru ) is a city in Karnataka. It is the cultural capital and second most important city of Karnataka. Mysore is a very popular weekend getaway from Bangalore and Kerala. It is unavoidable in Karnataka Tourism. Mysore is known for its palaces, gardens and annual celebrations of Dusshera. It is well connected with other cities in India via road and railways.

Dusshera

Dasshera (or Dusera ) is a 10 day festival in Karnataka celebrated in September/October. The palace will be lit by more than 100,000 lights and cultural events will be organized during this period.

Walk through Devaraja market

It is a 1km long market with stalls of everything from colors to fruits.

How to reach

Mysore is the second largest city in the state of Karnataka. Mysore was the erstwhile capital of the state when the Wodeyars ruled it. Since time immemorial Mysore has played an important part in the history of South India and especially of Karnataka. As time has passed though Mysore has changed according to the changing times it still retains its old world charm and continues to be to a quaint little city that is relaxed and moving at its own leisurely pace. Travelling to Mysore is easy. It is well connected by road and rail to all the major cities in India. Mysore does not have an airport though there are plans to construct an airport shortly. The nearest airport is in Bangalore.

How to Reach by Flight

The nearest airport to Mysore is Bangalore (139 km). All the domestic airlines in the country operate their flights to Bangalore from all the major cities in the country. Some international airlines too have flights to Bangalore. Bangalore is to have an international airport shortly.

How to Reach by Train

Mysore is connected with a number of trains to Bangalore. The super fast luxury train the Shatabdi Express connects Mysore to Madras. The quickest and most comfortable way to reach Mysore is via Bangalore.

How to Reach by Bus

The Karnataka Road Transport Corporation has excellent bus service to Mysore. There are ordinary buses, semi-luxury buses and luxury buses operated by the Government of Karnataka. Every half an hour there is a non-stop bus to Mysore from Bangalore Bus Station. Corporations of other states and private tour operators have buses plying to Mysore as well.

How to Reach by Road

Mysore is 139kms to the south west of Bangalore. The state highway that connects these two cities is very well maintained. Travelling from Bangalore to Mysore by road is a pleasant experience and will take about 3hrs.

Finding accommodation in Mysore will not be difficult as there are abundant hotels and resorts. However, the best ones will be booked during the peak seasons, booking in advance is recommended. There are few hostel providers/chains who operate here if you are looking for cheaper accommodation options. 

Food and Drinks

Popular food items are Mysore Pak ( a sweet) . and Mysore Masala Dosa. There are many restaurants which serve South Indian, North Indian and Chinese cuisine. There may not be many restaurants which open early in the morning.

Liquor laws are very liberal here, you can easily find wine shops which sells many international and domestic brands. There are around a dozen pubs and numerous bars. There is no nightlife here, most of the shops will be closed by around 10:00 pm.

Be alert if you plan to wander in the night as the city is usually deserted after 10:00 pm.

People are very friendly here, still be cautious.
