Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary Tourism

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the four ranges of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, which is the largest wildlife sanctuary of Kerala, the other three being, Sulthan Bathery, Kurichiat and Tholpetty. The wildlife sanctuary is located in Wayanad, Kerala. The Sanctuary is an important part of the Nilgiri Forest Reserve. It is committed to scientific conservation and also considers the general lifestyle of the tribal who live in and around the sanctuary. It has been declared as a Project Elephant site in 1991-1992 to protect them from being killed and thus a large number of elephants can be seen in this sanctuary. There are various species of animals that can be seen in the forest region like deer, monkey, bison, panther, wild cats, tigers, Gaur, panthers, wild dogs etc. It has also been blessed with a variety of birds like Babblers, cuckoos, owls, peacocks, woodpeckers etc. The Sanctuary is mainly popular with the wildlife enthusiasts, wildlife photographers and the nature lovers. Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of 345 sp. km. There are a wide range of trees like vengal, rosewood, chadachi, bamboo, maruthi, venteak etc. The sanctuary should be visited post monsoon and during the winter periods. It only remains open from August-February and remains closed in March-April. It was established as wildlife sanctuary in 1973. The sanctuary connects Karnataka and Tamil Nadu through the Bndipur and Madumalai parks. It takes about 2 hours for the jeep safari.

There are certain places near the sanctuary. Within 10 km of the area, there are two resorts, Orchid Resorts and Sterling Wayanad. Attractions of the Sanctuary

The wildlife at the sanctuary is one of the major attractions as it provides an opportunity to see a large number of different species and the eco-tourism activities that are conducted help to generate awareness about the need for conserving the forests. In order to see the various forms of life in the sanctuary, there are jeep safaris available that enables the tourists to see the animals as the jeeps pass amidst the forest. Tourists, especially the nature lovers, can also trek through the forest on their feet. People can also go for elephant camp visit and bird watching in the sanctuary.

How to reach

Wayanad does not have an airport of its own; it does not have a railway station. However the place is well connected major cities of South India.

How to Reach by Flight

Wayanad does not have an airport of its own. The nearest airport is Calicut International Airport that is the Kozhikode Airport, which is located at a distance of around 61 km away from the place. There are taxi and bus services available outside the airport.

How to Reach by Train

The place does not have a railway station of its own. The nearest railway station is Nilambur Railway Station, which is situated at a distance of around 90 km from Wayanad. However, the bigger and mostly used railway station is at Kozhikode, which is located at a distance of around 110 km. Cab services as well as buses are available from the railway station to reach Wayanad.

How to Reach by Bus

State-run buses as well as those owned by private agencies are available from major cities like Bangalore, Mysore, Kochi, Chennai and several other places. There are also buses directly from these cities to Wayanad. 

How to Reach by Road

Wayanad is well connected by roads to several major cities. The distance of the place from Bangalore is around 280 km and takes 6 hours. The distance of Mysore is around 130 km and takes around 3 hours. From Chennai, it is at a distance of around 620 km and will take around 12 hours.  

How to travel within

The best way to travel from one place to another inside the city is by taking autos, public and private buses, rickshaws and taxis. Certain hotels and resorts also provide the tourists with car rentals.

Nearby Attractions

Chembak Peak, the highest point in Kerala, lies a few miles away from the sanctuary. Eddakal Caves and Kuruva Island are also among the major tourist attractions nearby. Meenmutty Waterfalls lies at a distance of around 30 km from the sanctuary.  Soochippara falls and pookot lake lies at a distance of around 30 km from the sanctuary. Other parks close to it are Bandipur National Park, Mudumalai Elephant Park and Nagarhole Wildlife Sanctuary.

Jeep Safari

Wayanad has an eco-tourism programme which is of 2 hours and involves a jeep safari along with an expert guide and a driver. This safari is conducted by the Forest Department in the tourist zone of the jungle. Herds of elephants and other animals are a regular sight of these safaris; however the sight of a tiger can also be possible. These safaris are generally higher in the morning and the evening when the chance of these animals coming to these zones is higher. The morning safari is from 7:00 am – 10:00 am, where 40 jeeps are allowed and the evening safari is from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm, where only 20 jeeps are allowed. These safaris cover a distance of 10 km.
