Munnar Tourism

Munnar is a popular hill station in Kerala. It has been a popular destination for honeymooners for a long time. Munnar is known for its beautiful tea plantations. Most of the plantations were started by British. "Kannan Devan" brand tea is made in Munnar. Munnar can be visited throughout the year, the climate remains pleasant even during the summer. During winter the temperature can be as low as 5 degrees. The hill station is accessible from all sides via roads. Munnar is an unavoidable destination in Kerala Tourism. Top places to visit in Munnar includes lakes, dams, tea gardens, waterfalls, and forests.

Neelakurinji ( flower which blooms every 12 years )

It is a flower which blooms only once in 12 years. The flower is blue in color and the whole valley will be covered in blue when Neelakurinji blooms. The next bloom is expected to be in mid-2018.  Nature lovers from across the planet visit Munnar during this event. It can be viewed from Eravikulam National Park. The national park is home to a variety of endangered species. There are many locations where you can view the Neelakurinji but most of them are restricted by the Kerala tourism department.

Best time to visit Munnar

The climate is pleasant throughout the year. The temperature in summer varies from 15 to 25 degrees in summer and 5 to 10 degrees in winter. It is best visited after the monsoon as the hills will be lush green ( after October). Summar starts by around March end. Visiting during the monsoon can be dangerous as the area is prone t landslides.

Activities

Boating

Boating is available at many tourist spots ( usually dams). There will be traditional boats as well as motorboats.

Cycling

Cycles are available for hire at many shops in the town center. cycling through tea gardens can be a relaxing experience.

Elephant Ride

Head to Elephant Arrival spot ( around 28km from town center ) for a ride on an elephant. It will cost about Rs 400 per person.

Trekking

There are many trekking spots. The trek to Chokramudi ( 7200 feet ) is a challenging trek, there can be snakes, elephants, and bears. The trek starts near Suryanelli. Chitrapuram and Chummar are the other two popular treks.

Ayurveda and Yoga

There are few resorts which offer Ayurvedic treatments and yoga lessons. Yoga lessons amidst misty tea gardens will be an enchanting experience.

Shopping

Coffee and Tea can be bought from numerous shops and stalls on the roadside. Munnar is also famous for home-made chocolates.

Language

Malayalam and Tamil are the languages spoken by people here. People are also comfortable with English.

Food and Drinks

There are many restaurants in the town and near tourist attractions. Most of the restaurants serve Kerala or Tamil Nadu cuisine but there are few North Indian restaurants.Food will not be a problem here. Street food is very popular, there are many stalls near the town center.

The Beverages Corporation (bevco) outlet is closed permanently. The nearest state-run liquor shop is in Devikulam ( 9km ). Few resorts and restaurants have the bar attached to them. 

How to reach

At a distance of 120 km from Kochi, 284 km from Trivandrum, 142 km from Coimbatore, 134 km from Kottayam, 153 km from Thrissur, 100 km from Athirapally Falls and 150 km from Madurai.It is well connected with there cities by regular buses. The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport(COK).

How to Reach by Flight

The nearest airport is the Cochin International Airport, which is 110 kilometers away by road. From Cochin, you can hire a cab. The Madurai International Airport is 140 kilometers away. In case you de-board at the Madurai International Airport, you can hire a cab or board the state transport or private buses.

How to Reach by Train

The nearest railway station is at Aluva, which is at a distance of 110 kilometres. The Ernakulam Railway Station is 130 kilometres away while the Madurai Railway Station is at a distance of 135 kilometres. From these points, you can either hire a cab or board the state transport or private buses wherever available.

How to Reach by Bus

Kerala State Road Transport Corporation provides bus services from all major cities in Kerala and from Bangalore.

How to Reach by Road

Munnar is 130 km (3.5 hr) from Kochi. The road is blind in some places and there are a lot of trucks and buses that seem to drive as if they own the road. Although the road is smooth (NH 49), it is narrow, twisty and curvy. Kothamangalam is on the way and is 80 km away. Between Kothamangalam and next town "Adimali", you can experience a beautiful cool drive through a natural forest. Alongside, you can see many refreshing waterfalls. Around 22 km from Adimali, you can start seeing the tea plantations on both sides of the road and a panoramic view of the western ghats. The view is extremely beautiful during the early mornings.

How to travel within

Local buses and Rickshaws are available for commute within.

Safety Tips

Hilly regions and wet regions are prone to leeches, carry table salt to get rid of them.

Sunscreen should be used as it will be sunny during the daytime.

If you are driving to Munnar, most of the roads which lead here are dangerous with blind curves. There is also a possibility of landslides during monsoon. There will be fog at night, leave early in the evening.

You may spot wild animals like elephants on road, do not provoke them.
