Malda, also known as the gateway of North Bengal, is a city in the state of West Bengal that is located in the Malda district and is at a distance of around 350 km from Kolkata, the capital city of the state. It is located at the confluence of the rivers Mahanadi and Kalindi. The city is most popular for its mangoes, Fazil that is distributed throughout India as well as beyond. Silk and jute are also among the popular products of the district. The city is also known for its rich culture and heritage can take you back to your roots. Malda has its own separate cultures like Gombhira, Alkap, Kavigan, etc. The different places of interest of the city are Adina Relics, which consists of Adina Mosque, GolGhar, Eklakhi mosque, and Adina deer Park, Relics of Your, which consists of Firozminar, Chika masjid, Qatwali gate, 12-gated mosque and Oudm-e-Rasul. Festivals

The people of Malda celebrate different festivals like Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Diwali, Dussehra, Bhogta mela, Eid al-Adha, Muharram, Milad un-Nabi, Shab-e-Barat, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Christmas, Ratha Yatra, and Maha Shivratri. Malda is dominated by Bengali culture an also celebrates many of the Bengali festivals like Rath Yatra. It is celebrated in the month of June-July and is dedicated to Lord Jagannath. Mahishadal is beautifully decorated and becomes colorful during this festival when Jagannath, Balram, and Subhadra are transported to their aunt’s place. Durga Puja is one of the main festivals of Bengalis and it is celebrated with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm. It is a ten-day festival that is celebrated in October. During this time a lot of fairs are organized, there are a variety of food, handicrafts, and games. Vishwakarma Puja is another festival celebrated in September and is dedicated to Lord Vishwakarma, believed to be a lord of tools, weapons, and mechanics. Vasa Utsav is a small festival celebrated in the city of Malda. It is a literary festival where the poets of the district and other districts of Bengal are recognized.

Malda does not have an airport of its own, however, it has one of the most important railway stations and therefore train is one of the main connectivity to the place.

Malda does not have an airport of its own. The nearest airport is Netaji Subhash Chandra International Airport in Kolkata, which is located at a distance of around 350 km. There are however buses and cab services available to reach Malda.

How to Reach by Train

Malda is one of the main railway stations of the area, and it connects the area well to nearby places like Kolkata as well as to other cities like Delhi and Mumbai. It, however, does not have regular and frequent trains.

Food

One of the main attractions of Malda is mangoes. Fazli, Langra, Mohonbhog, Dudhkumar, Begambahar, Nababpasin, Dudhiya, etc are the types of mangoes that are mostly very popular. Chutney, jam, jelly, pickle, aamswatta, aam sherbet are also native to the district. Gurh or molasses, jaggery, haati pawa luchi, khaja and Rasakadamba, Makhana are some of the other popular food items of the place. The cuisine in Malda is mainly Bengali cuisine which is dominated by dishes of rice and fish or meat. Bengalis are extremely fond of fish and this is not a secret to the world. The entire state includes preparations of fishes like rohu, tangra, magur, shingi, katla, ilish and many more, among which ilish is the most preferred and the season of hilsa is celebrated with a lot of “Ilish festivals” being organized throughout the state. The food is generally very spicy and includes spices like kalonji and panch phoran, which includes a mixture of fennel, cumin, black mustard seeds, fenugreek, etc. The street food of Malda includes chat, kachori, samosas, and beguni. Puchka and Muri are the most sought after street foods of the state. Bengalis also provide a large number of sweet dishes like Rosogolla, Sondes, Pantua, Rasmalai, Pitha, Chamcham and mishit doi.

Malda Itinerary

Day 1- After reaching Kolkata airport, leave for Malda. On reaching Malda, have your breakfast and then leave for Adina Deer Park, Adina Mosque and Baroduari Mosque. 

Day 2- After having breakfast leave for Chamkati Masjid Chika Mosque, Dakhil Darwaza, Eklakhi Mausoleum (pandua), Luko Churi Gate and Firoz Minar.

Day 3- After having breakfast leave for Gour, Kadam Rasul Mosque, Lattan Mosque, Temple of Jauhra Kali and Malda Museum.
