Lonavla is a hill station in the state of Maharashtra in the Pune district. This place falls in the Mumbai-Pune route and connects the two major cities of the country. The place is close but away from the hustle and bustle of the two major cities of the country, Mumbai and Pune and therefore is one of the most visited place by the people of Maharashtra. There are local trains available from the Pune city that helps to reach Lonavla. It is not a huge hill station and has a population of 55,652. The term Lonavla refers to caves as it has several caves surrounding it. Lonavla has a twin hill Khandala and tourists generally visit these two hills together. It also provides an option of trekking for the adventure lovers. The Andharban trek, beginning from Pimpri and ending in Bhira, involves passing through dense forests. The hill station has a lot to offer to its visitors. People can visit Rajmachi Point, Ryewood Park and Shivaji Udyan, Valvan dam, Della Adventure Park, Lonavla Lake, Duke’s Nose, Tigers Leap, Karla Caves, Lohagad Fort, Visapur Fort, Bhushi Dam, Lion Point, Narayani Dham, Tungarli Dam, Shooting Point, Seven Villas etc. These are all located near Lonavla and Khandala. Tourists generally visit the place for relaxation and refreshment.

Lonavla is mainly popular for its chikkis, brittle candy, all over the country. The local food of Lonavla is delicious and spicy. Masala Chai, coconut water, spicy Vada Pav and Bhajiyas are some of the main attractions of the hill station. Some of the popular restaurants are Fusion, Hotel Gurukrupa and Hotel Ramakrishna and some popular vegetarian restaurants are Kamat’s Green House, Creme Della, Hotel Chandralok, La Boulangere. Roasted corn is one of the dishes sold by the street hawkers. There are several roadside shops that sell the local food of the state. Apart from Maharashtrian food, the place also serves South Indian, Chinese, Continental and Punjabi food. Chola Bhatura, Butter Chicken and fudge are also very popular in Lonavla.
How to reach
Lonavla has its own railway station however does not have an airport of its own. It is well connected by roadways to Pune and Mumbai.
How to Reach by Flight
Lonavla does not have an airport of its own. The hill station has two airports in its close proximity. The nearest airport is the Pune Airport, located at a distance of around 64 km and the other is the Mumbai Airport, located at a distance of around 96 km. People can take the rail or taxi services to Lonavla.
How to Reach by Train
Lonavla has its own railway station. Though the station is not well connected to other major cities of the country, people can board a train to Mumbai or Pune and then take another train to Lonavla.
How to Reach by Bus
There are state-run buses as well as those owned by private agencies that connect Lonavla to other Mumbai and Pune.
How to Reach by Road
Lonavla is located in the Mumbai-Pune route and therefore helps to link the two major cities of the country. It is a two hour drive from Mumbai and there are several buses, cabs and cars available to reach the place
How to travel within
There are buses, autos, rented bicycles and taxis are available to move from one place to the other. People can also take their private vehicles to the town. It is advisable to fix the rates before the journey starts as the taxis and autos do not run on meter.
Festival
Ganesh Chaturthi and Vijayadashami are the two most popular festival of the hill station that is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm. During Ganesh Chaturthi tribute is paid to the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The festival is celebrated in the month of August or September and brings all the craftsmen and local artists together for the celebration. During Vijayadashami, that is the last evening of the annual Navratri festival, involves giving offerings to Goddess Durga. Other festivals like Pune festival, Diwali and Dussehra are also celebrated at this place. Te place also celebrates music festivals like DFusion Music Festival.
Lonavala Itinerary
Day 1- After reaching Pune Airport, leave for Lonavla. After you reach there, visit Aambey Valley, Bhairavnath Temple, Bhaja Caves and then go for city shopping. Overnight stay at Lonavla.
Day 2- After breakfast leave for Bushi Dam, Celebrity Wax Museum, Duke’s Nose, Karla Caves and Imagica Adlabs. Overnight stay at Lonavla.
Day 3- After breakfast you can visit Koregad Fort, Scorpion’s Sting and Sausage Hills. You can then go for city shopping. Overnight stay at Lonavla.
Day 4- After breakfast leave for Lohagad Fort, Lonavala Lake, Rajmachi and Rajmachi Fort. Overnight stay at Lonavla.
Day 5- After breakfast visit the Ryewood Park, Tunga Fort, Tungarli Dam and Tungarli Lake. Overnight stay at Lonavla.
Day 6- After breakfast you can leave for Tikona Fort, Valvan Dam and Visapur Fort. You can then go for city shopping. Overnight stay at Lonavla.
