CAREFUL If YOU HAVE HEALTH ISSUES
People with lung and heart diseases should consult with doctors before taking this trip and take necessary precautions while travelling.
TAKE IT SLOW…GET ACCLIMATISED
Do not plan or try to save time by starting your adventure just the day you arrive. Take a day to get acclimatised to the low temperature, the high altitude and the low oxygen level. It will only improve the experience you have for the whole trip. (You can get small oxygen cylinders in stores in Leh if you get breathing difficulties.)
EXPECT THE TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATIONS
Even if you travel in summer there might be severe temperature fluctuations in day and night. So be prepared to survive such unexpected events. Layering is the best option to avoid chills. Keep enough woollen cloths to add layers to your dressing.
GET THE PERMITS
Some of the areas like the Nubra valley in Ladakh require special permits to visit. Make sure to get them prior to the trip.
EXPECT TELECOMMUNICATION GAPS
There are regions in Leh Ladakh where telecommunication facilities are unavailable. So take precautions and expect such glitches. It will only make your getaway more peaceful in most cases.
BOOK IN ADVANCE
If you don’t want be searching for a shelter when the weather goes bad or in case of any other possible emergencies; do make prior bookings so you have someplace to rest even when things go downhill.
How to reach
There are two modes of travelling you can opt. By road and by flight.
How to Reach by Flight
DELHI AIRPORT - LEH AIRPORT: 1H 25M
MUMBAI AIRPORT - LEH AIRPORT: 2H 40M
KOCHI AIRPORT - LEH AIRPORT: 10H 20M
This is the best option if you can afford it, as it saves a lot of time and also gives you the chance to see this spectacular part of earth from high above; it is one of the most scenic views to watch from a flight.
How to Reach by Train
The nearest railroad station is Jammu Tawi (700 km from Ladakh) connected to major stations like Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. You can enlist a taxi or board a JKSRTC transport to achieve Ladakh from that point. This is not so highly recommended since its a bit more expensive and time consuming.
How to Reach by Bus
Ladakh is connected with Srinagar and Jammu by roads. The bus route is to Ladakh is a bit too bumpy to enjoy.
How to Reach by Road
There are two routes by road:
SRINAGAR-LEH ROUTE (422kms): 2 DAYS TRAVEL
MANALI-LEH ROUTE (479kms): 2 DAYS TRAVEL
How to travel within
Motorbike rides are the best option to get around Leh. Buses and jeeps are also available for tourists; but the poor condition of the roads and the narrow winding rocky terrains make the ride too bumpy to enjoy sometimes.
Dine & drink
While have a lifetime adventure in Leh Ladakh do not forget to taste these unique delicacies
CHHUPRI: Cheese from yak milk.
BUTTER TEA: A homemade drink and hard to find in restaurants.
MOMOS: They come in different shapes and varieties here.
THUKPA: A Tibetan soup.
