The Mahalasa Temple also known as Mahalasa Narayani Temple is situated 4 hours away from Kumta City in the town of Mardol. It was established in the year of 1565 AD on land donated by the Pai Family of Kumta. The Archaks who used an aliased name of Gaurav constructed the temple also is famous for carrying the bronze statue of Shri Mahalasa from Goa to Mardol in an earthen pot. Dedicated to the diety Mahalasa Narayani the temple also houses and worships other deities like Laxminarayan, Grampurush, Shanteri, Dadshankar, Bhagavati and Kalabhairav. The temple has unique wood carvings presents in its ceilings and pedestals along with colourful paintings adorning its walls that represent stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata.
