Kufri Tourism

Kufri is a small hill station in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India. It falls in the Shimla district and is at a distance of 20km from the city of Shimla. It has a population of 1,148. The term Kufri has been derived from a local word ‘Kufr’ which means “lake”. The hill station hosts several trekking activities as it is the highest point in the surrounding area. The town is mostly covered with snow. Kufri was initially a part of Nepal until it was given to the British Raj as a partof the Sugauli Treaty. The town was discovered by the British in 1819 after which it came in contact with the rest of the world. Kufri has a bunglow, named Chini Bunglow, which is very popular for its statues and architecture. Being a hill station, the town has a very refreshing atmosphere. In the month of February, winter sports festival is organized every year by the tourist department of Himachal Pradesh in the town of Kufri. The main event in the festival is the skiing competition. The town is perfect for a summer getaway as it never fails to impress the tourists with its pleasant weather and beautiful scenic view.

Food and Stay

Kufri is a very small town and does not have much to offer in terms of food. However there are stalls on the road serving hot momos and maggis, which is very much in demand in the hill stations. The town has dhabas that provide very delicious and good food. The stalls on the streets also sell cup of hot tea,parathas, noodles, pakoras as well as chaats. There are also a variety of hotels, for those who are looking for pocket-friendly ones as well as those who are looking for the luxurious ones.

How to reach

Kufri does not have an airport or a railway station of its own. There are however decent roads to reach Kufri and the most convenient way is to reach there through Shimla.

How to Reach by Flight

Kufri does not have an airport of its own. The nearest airport is Jabbar Bhatti Airport in Shimla, which is around 20km away from the town. However the nearest major airport is in Chandigarh, which is around 66km from Kufri. Cabs are available outside the airport to reach Kufri

How to Reach by Train

Kufri does not have a railway station of its own. The nearest railway station is Shimla Railway Station, which is at a distance of around 20km from the town. Cabs are available to reach to Kufri from the station however this station is not connected with the rest of the country. Reaching Chandigarh station and then taking a toy train, a cab or a bus to Kufri is preferable.

How to Reach by Bus

Kufri is well connected to certain nearby places by road. State-run buses as well as those owned by private agencies are available. Several buses from Shimla, Narkanda and Rampur are available to reach Kufri.

How to Reach by Road

From Shimla, depending upon the traffic on the Kufri Chail Rad, it doesn’t generally take more than half an hour to reach Kufri. The town is at a distance of around 360km from Delhi and takes around 8 hours 30 minutes. The distance from Narkanda is around 50km and takes around 2 hours to reach Kufri.

How to travel within

There are cabs and buses available to reach from one destination to the other in the town of Kufri. To reach the top of Mahasu Peak, horses are available.

Shopping

Kufri, despite of being a small town, has a marketplace for the tourists who visit the beautiful hill station. The marketplace has shops that sell handmade accessories, handicrafts, which show the skills of the craftsmen here, and small souvenirs. The main bazaar has clothes and shoes which cater to the needs to men, women as well as children.  Due to the cold weather, the shops also sell woollen socks, mufflers, caps, gloves that will help to keep the locals as well as the tourists warm.

Kufri Itinerary

Day 1- After reaching Shimla airport, have breakfast at Shimla and roam around the city for the day. Then leave for Kufri and after reaching the hotel, rest for the day.

Day 2- After breakfast, leave for Mahasu Peak and go for skiing. Then visit The Himalayan National Park. After that, go for shopping or rest at the hotel.

Day 3- After breakfast leave for Indira Tourist Park and then go to Kufri Fun World. After this, rest at the hotel for the day.
