Kotagiri, als known as Kothagiri, in a hill station in the state of Tamil Nadu. It falls in the Nilgiri District. It is a moderately populated and the third largest hill station in the Nilgiri hills. The different villages that fall in the territory of the hill station are Hittakkal, Aracode, Denad, Hallimoyar, Jackanarai etc. The term Kotagiri means line of mountain of the Kotas. The hills station used to be the summer resort of the British and has one of the best climates. The hill station attracts hundreds of tourists due to its beautiful view and also its location, as it is located at the outskirts of the hustle and bustle of Coimbatore and Coonoor. The major tourist attractions of the place are Kodanand View Point, Elk Falls, St, Catherine’s Falls, Longwood Shola and Rangaswamy Peak and Pillar. The plce also has Nehru Park which has the temple of Kotas, Gandhi Maidanam, and congregation centre etc, located at a distance of around 3 km from the main town. This hill station is also considered to be a better and perfect alternative to Ooty, which is the most well known and thus one of the most crowded hill stations. People can also go for a walk in the tea gardens and embrace the beautiful weather and the beauty of the Nilgiris.

The place is located in Tamil Nadu and thus serves a variety of south Indian dishes, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. Some of the popular dishes are Uttapam, Banana Bonda, Rasam, Dosa, Muruku, Sambar, Coconut Chutney, Idli and Vada, Lemon Rice, Pruppu Payasam, Poriyal, Pongal, Kootu, Puliodarai, Koozh etc. It provides a variety of tea flavours like chocolate tea, elaichi tea, ginger tea and many more varieties. There are also restaurants that serve north Indian and Chinese food.

Kotagiri does not have an airport or a railway station of its own. However it is connected to the nearby cities by roadways.

How to Reach by Flight

Kotagiri does not have an airport of its own. The nearest airport is Coimbatore airport, which is located at a distance of round 47 km. There are taxi and bus services available from outside the airport to reach Kotagiri. People can also take a train from Coimbatore to Coonoor and then a taxi to Kotagiri. 

How to Reach by Train

Kotagiri does not have a railway station of its own. The nearest railway station is at Coonoor, located at a distance of around 20 km from the hill station. Other nearby railway stations are at Ooty, located at a distance of around 30 km and Mettuplayam, located at a distance of around 35 km. Taxi and bus services are available from outside the railway stations.

How to Reach by Bus

State-run buses and those owned by private agencies are available that helps to connect Kotagiri to nearby cities like Trichy, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Mettupalayam etc.

How to Reach by Road

Kotagiri is a very popular hill station but however it does not have an airport or a railway station and thus has a well connected system of roadways that helps to connect the place to the nearby places.

How to travel within

There are buses that help to connect one place to the other. However there are taxi or cab services that are a better option to travel within the place.


One of the most important festivals of Kotagiri is the annual festival that is celebrated in the temple of Kamataraya deity on the Arudra Darshan day. Another important festival is the thaipoosam festival celebrated in the month of February in the Elk Hill Murugan Temple.


There are certain small shops in Kotagiri selling south Indian artefacts made by the Kota tribes, hand-made antiques, handloom and shawls. However the best things to try while visiting Kotagiri is the tea and there is also a variety of good quality tea that people buy from the place. There are also Irish and Belgian table sets and bed sheets found there.

Kotagiri Itinerary

Day 1- After reaching the Coimbatore airport, proceed towards Kotagiri. After reaching there, visit the Catherine Falls, Elk Falls and the Kodanand View Point.

Day 2- After breakfast leave for Longwood Shola and visit the John Sullivan Memorial and then go for trekking.
