Kolhapur is a city in the state of Maharashtra and falls in the Kolhapur district. It is believed that the place was named after the demon Kolhasur, whose dying wish was to name the place where he was killed after him. Thus the name Kolhapur, ‘Pur’ means a city. Kolhapur experiences better climate than the other neighbouring cities. The temperature in summer ranges from 10⁰C to 38⁰C and during winter it is between 9⁰C to 32⁰C. This place is visited by around three million people every year. The two major malls of the place are DYP City Mall and Reliance Mega Mall. The major attractions in and around the city are Mahalaxmi Temple, New Palace, Rankala Lake, Shivaji University and Temlabai mandir are in the city and Panhala Fort, Jyotiba Temple, Narsobawadi, Bahubali, Siddhagiri Gramjivan Museum, Gaganbawda, Gagangiri Maharaj math, Khidrapur, Dajipur Bison Sanctuary, Ramling, Amboli and Radhanagari Dam. The city is also known for its Kolhapuri Chappal, Kolhapuri lavangi mirchi, Kolhapuri gur and Kolhapuri cuisine.

Kolhapur is a paradise for the foodies and mainly involves spicy curries and fries. The cooking is done in the Maharashtrin style and is known as ‘Kolhapuri cuisine’. Misal, a spicy gravy of potatoes, peas and sprouts, is one of the most popular dishes of the city. Khasbaug Misal, Fadatare Misal, Bawda Misal, Chorage Misal are some of the places where Misal is available in the city. Vada pav is another very popular street food of Maharashtra. Bhel is also a street food popular in the entire state. Davangiri Loni Dosa and Akhkha Masoor are also popular dishes of the city. Kolhapuri mutton or chicken and Tambda is also a popular dish. Veg Kolhapuri, Bharli Vangi and Pithala Bhakri are also other dishes enjoyed by the locals. Kolhapur is also popular for its jaggery as there are vast sugarcane fields with 12 jaggery factories. The regular meal of the people in Kolhapur includes Chapatis, Naan, Parathas, Dal, Rice, Meat dishes, Misal Pav and Sabudana Khichdi, Khanda Bhajji and Batata Vada. Puran Poli and Shrikand are mainly used for festivals.

Kolhapur has an airport of its own as well as a railway station. It is a popular destination among the tourists and therefore can be availed by road as well as rail.

Kolhapur has an airport of its own with the name Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj Airport, which is at a distance of around 9 km from the main city. The nearest international airports are Pune International Airport, which is located at a distance of around 243 km from the place, and Goa International Airport, which is located at a distance of around 226 km. There are taxi services available from the airport.

How to Reach by Train

Kolhapur has a railway station of its own by the name Chatrapati Sahu Maharaj. The place is well connected with other major cities of the country like Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Delhi, Ahmedabad etc.

How to Reach by Bus

There are state-run buses as well as those owned by the private agencies that connect Kolhapur to other places like Pune and Mumbai.

How to Reach by Road

Kolhapur can also be reached by roadways. Mumbai is an 8 hour drive from Mumbai and is a 3 hours drive from Pune. It is located at a distance of around 228 km from Pune, around 615 km from Bengaluru and around 530 km from Hyderabad.

How to travel within

There are buses, taxis and rickshaws available for moving from one place of the city to the other. People can also walk and explore the city.


Kolhapur celebrates a large number of festivals like Navratra Mahotsav, generally celebrated in the month of October, to commemorate Goddess Durga and Mahishasur, a demon who was killed by Durga. During this festival, the temple of Goddess Mahalaxmi is decorated and is offered special poojas. Another festival is Lalita Panchami Festival, celebrated on the 5th day of Navaratri. Ashtami Festival is another festival celebrated on the 8th days of Navaratri. Kolhapur celebrates another festival known as the Kirnotsav, celebrated in the Mahalaxmi temple when the ray of the sun falls on the idol. Rathotsav is another festival organized by the Mahalaxmi temple of the city in the month of April. Another festival called Kolhapur Rankala Mahotsav is an annual festival celebrated at the Rankala Lake of the city. This festival is organized by the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation and comprises of musical concerts and stage performances. Jyotiba Yatra is a fair which is organized at the time of Holi to honour Lord Jyotiba. Thousands of people attend this fair every year. Other festivals like Holi, Diwali, Ganeshotsav, Gudi Patava etc are also celebrated in the city.    

Kolhapur Itinerary

Day 1- After reaching Kolhapur railway station, leave for the hotel. Then visit the Jyotiba Temple, Binkhambi Ganesh Temple, Mahalaxmi Temple and Panhala Fort.

Day 2- After breakfast, leave for Rankala Lake, Temlabai Mandir, Shri Chatrapati Shahu Museum and then go for city shopping.
