Khammam was ruled by Musunuri Kamma kings. During the period of Musunuri Kamanaidu, it was named Kamamettu, Kammamettu (Khammam). Khammam City, which was the seat of Taluk dynasty, was a member of the comprehensive Warangal District, until 1953. In 1973, a distinct taluk with Sathupalli as its quarters was shaped out from Madhira and Kothagudem taluks. In the year 1976 four new taluks were formed: Tirumalayapalem, Sudimalla, Aswaraopeta and Khammam district was originally a member of bigger Warangal District. The city also has a great religious significance and Lord Narasimha Swamy, on Narasimhaswamy gutta is a very mighty deity in the town. Several travellers from faraway spots revisit the place frequently. Due to the ubiquity of Lord Narasimhaswami temple in Khammam, the city was identified as Sthambadri formerly.
