Khammam Tourism

Found on the banks of River Munneru, a tributary of Krishna River, Khammam is one of the best tourist destinations in the state of Telangana. Khammam acquired its title from 'Stambadri', a mountain on which an antiquated Narasimha temple is constructed. Stambadri was summoned Kambam Mettu, which was subsequently changed to Khammam. Khammam district is recognised for its natural sources like coal and iron ore. It is furthermore renowned for its natural charm. Godavari River rushes through Khammam. Khammam district is adjoined with Bastar precinct of Chattisghar state which is the heart of Dandakaranya forest area. Khammam was governed by plural sovereignties which include Kakatiyas, Musunuri Nayaks and Velama kings, Reddy kings, Qutb Shahi and Nizams of Hyderabad. Khammam district has numerous traveller pulls like Bhadrachalam, Kinnerasani Dam & Sanctuary, Khammam Fort, Kusumanchi Temples, Nelakondaalli, etc. Females in the town observe Bathukamma, which is a floral carnival in which they praise the goddess with distinctive flowers for nine days.

Khammam's History: Birth-giver to Great Leaders

Khammam was ruled by Musunuri Kamma kings. During the period of Musunuri Kamanaidu, it was named Kamamettu, Kammamettu (Khammam). Khammam City, which was the seat of Taluk dynasty, was a member of the comprehensive Warangal District, until 1953. In 1973, a distinct taluk with Sathupalli as its quarters was shaped out from Madhira and Kothagudem taluks. In the year 1976 four new taluks were formed: Tirumalayapalem, Sudimalla, Aswaraopeta and Khammam district was originally a member of bigger Warangal District. Records of Khammam reveals that it has spawned a plenty of leaders who were heroes in the movement of Freedom, such as first-generation Communist leaders like Peravelli Venkata Ramanaiah, Pendyala Satyanarayana Rao, Sarvadevabhatla Ramanatham, K.L.Narsimha Rao, and Chirravuri Laxminarasaiah First Municipal Chairman of Khammam; Congress leaders Madapati Hanumantha Rao, Chepuri Nenkanna, Madapati Ramchander Rao, Sardar Jamalpuram Keshava Rao, Bommakanti Satyanarayana Rao, Hayagreeva Chary, and the list goes on. The city also has a great religious significance and Lord Narasimha Swamy, on Narasimhaswamy gutta is a very mighty deity in the town. Several travellers from faraway spots revisit the place frequently. Due to the ubiquity of Lord Narasimhaswami temple in Khammam, the city was identified as Sthambadri formerly. The City is found on the banks of a river called Munneru which is a tributary of the River Khammam.

There is no dearth in the options for reaching Khammam. The nearest airport is Vijayawada airport which is around 107 Km from the place. One can also reach via railways, cabs, taxis and buses. Khammam is very well connected by Road and Train from Hyderabad and Vijayawada. It is merely 2 hours drive from Vijayawada and 3 hours from Hyderabad. Khammam also has wonderful public transportation facility. The Khammam railway station lies between Hyderabad - Vijayawada line and has regular train reciprocities.

Arrive early in the morning and after grabbing some breakfast head towards Shri Lakshmi Narasimha Kutumbam and have a wonderful morning in the lap of divinity. After that head towards Khammam fort. After visiting Khammam fort, have lunch and head towards Jamalpuram temple which is another famous tourist spot. Further, have a wonderful evening at the 'Palair Lake'. Later have a good shopping spree at the Kaman Bazaar. Leave from Khammam in the evening.
