Mulbekh Monastery

#2 of 6 things to do in Kargil

Mulbekh Monastery is located in the town of Mulbekh, around 45 km from Kargil situated toward the end of a valley. The religious community remains at a rise of around 200 m over the road, situated on the highest point of a slope. The gompa or the cloister contains a 9 m long statue of the Maitreya Buddha, otherwise called the Buddha of future or Laughing Buddha. It is said that the icon was cut during the eighth century and was brought here by the preachers who presented Buddhism in Ladakh. The religious community likewise has the remains of a few Buddhist priests. The fine art of the icon and the engineering of the religious monasteries demonstrate that they don't have a place with Tibet.
