Kamakshi Amman Temple

#5 of 8 things to do in Kanchipuram

This temple is dedicated to Goddess Kamakshi, the true form of Lalitha Tripura Sundari. It is one of the 51 Shakthi Peethas of the Adiparashakthi. These Shakthi peethas are considered to be relics of the parts of Sati's dead body that fell onto the earth. This Shakthi Peetha is believed to be where the navel part of Sati fell.

Legend has it that King Dasaratha, the father of Lord Rama had performed the 'Putra Kameshi Yagam' here to receive an heir to his Kingdom.

It is also believed that the Goddess originally manifested as 'Ugra Swaroopam' and on the request of Adi Shankara manifested as 'Shanthi Swaroopam'.
