Kalimpong Tourism

On the foothills of the Shivalik, the last of the Himalayan range lies the small hill station called Kalimpong. It is a virgin hill station in West Bengal that is known for the panoramic view it gives especially during sunsets or sunrise. There are many Buddhist monasteries, Hindu temples and Tibetian handicrafts to explore. It is widely known for its educational institutions that were established during the British colonial era. It also used to be the linking point between Tibet and India for trade. In the mid 19th century, Kalimpong was ruled by the Sikkimese and Bhutanese kingdoms in succession.

There are many monasteries available here along with Hindu temples. Kalimpong thus makes a pilgrim paradise as well. Being a part of a major trade route between two independent countries, it becomes an essential part of Indian history. Geographically, the town is on a ridge connecting two hills, Deolo Hills and is elevated at a height of 1,247 m. The beauty of this town is that many of the monasteries, churches and even temples are aged from a colonial era and are still almost the same. Two of the most famous monasteries are Jang Dong Palriffo Brang (Monastery), Thongsa Gompa (Bhutanese Monastery). Apart from monasteries, there are many flower markets that are famous for its orchids and other flowers.
