Kakinada, formerly known as Cocanada, is one of the largest cities in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It lies in the Eat Godavari district. The city has a population of 3.43 lakhs. The city is divided into two regions, which is connected by bridges. The main economy of the city depends on agriculture like rice, corn, bio fuel etc, fishing like shrimp, prawns etc and industrial products like chemicals, iron ore etc. The main exports from the Kakinada port is sea food, agricultural products like paddy, coconut etc. The main imports are chemicals, edible oils etc. It is among the fastest developing states in India and one of the fastest developing cities of Andhra Pradesh. There are several scholars and well known personalities from cricket and film industry from the city. The city has both the cultures, one side has been beautified with rich cultural heritage of the state and the other side showcases the success in industries and architecture. Kakinada is one of the hundred cities in India to be developed as a smart city under the Indian Prime Minister’s Smart Cities Mission. The city is mainly known for its scenic beauty at the beaches. Kakinada is a commercial centre but at the same time has several places of worship like temples, mosques and church. The gives people an amazing and unforgettable experience.

Kakinada is famous for the traditional Andhra food, which includes mutton, shrimp, fish, chicken, mango pickle and vegetables. However the most famous delicacy is Kakinada Kaaja, made of flour and sugar syrup. Tourists should also try the street foods like bhajis and pidatha kindha pappu made of onion and roasted rice. Another popular dish of the city is Pesarattu, dosa made of green gram served with different kinds of chutneys.

How to reach

Kakinada does not have an airport of its own. The city has its own railway station and is well connected to various other cities through roadways.

How to Reach by Flight

Kakinada does not have an airport of its own, the nearest airport is Rajahmundry Airport which is located at a distance of around 70 km and is a one hour drive from Kakinada. The nearest international airport is Visakhapatnam Airport which is around 125 km from the city. There are taxi services available outside both the airports that can provide help in reaching the city of Kakinada.

How to Reach by Train

Kakinada has a railway station of its own named Kakinada Junction which is around 3km from the city. Another railway station is Samalkot Railway Station located around 12km from the city.

How to Reach by Bus

Kakinada can be reached from several other cities by state buses as well as those run by private agencies. Buses are available at a regular interval from Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Narsapur etc.

The city is also connected to other places through well connected roads. Kakinada is around 21km from Pithapuram, around 109km from Narsapur, around 42km from Anaparthy. Kakinada is also connected to other cities by waterways, Kakinada Port.

Kakinada is a beautiful city and it can be explored by using taxi services, shared autos, autorickshaws. Open top rickshaws are unique to the city of Kakinada.


The various festivals celebrated in the city of Kakinada are Beach Festival, a 3 day long festival organized in the month of November. Pongal is one of the festivals which are celebrated in the entire state with a lot of enthusiasm and passion. On this day, people make a sweet dish of rice and also include cardamom and cashew nuts, which they dedicate to the Sun God, Surya. This dish is also eaten by them on the day of Pongal, which is held in the month of January. Thaipusam is another festival celebrated by the city. On the eve of Thaipusam, the devotees, in yellow and orange coloured dresses, walk towards Murugan temple carrying Chhatris. Ugadi is the New Year’s Day in Andhra Pradesh. Ganesh Chaturthi and Maker Sankranti are the other festivals celebrated in the state with great passion.

Kakinada Itinerary

Day 1- After reaching Kakinada, leave for Bhimesvara Temple and then go for Shopping in the market.

Day 2- After breakfast leave for Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary and then go to Draksharamam. Then rest for the day or go for shopping in the local markets.

Day 3- After breakfast, leave for Pithapuram and then go to Shri Bhavanarayana Swamy Temple
