The Heavenly Cascade of Water
Jog Falls Tourism
Popular as one of the highest waterfalls in India, Jog Falls is located in Karnataka and is a major tourist destination. Falling at a drop height of 253 meters, it is one of the most majestic falls that is created on Sharavathi River, in the Shimoga district of Karnataka. The Sharavathi River originates at Ambuthirtha in Thirthahalli taluka, and then flows north-west through the Western Ghats. The river then falls forming the Jog Falls before joining the Arabian Sea at Hanovar. The Jog Falls should be visited during the monsoon season to see the breathtaking view of the cascading waterfalls with clouds covering it and rainbows draping its gush of water. It is a segmented waterfall which hugely depends on rainy season and is also alternatively known as Gerusoppe Falls or Jogada Gundi. A trip to Jog Falls will also lead to visiting the famous tourist places near it that includes Tunga Anicut Dam, Honnemaradu, and Lion Tiger Reserve, along with traveling to the nearby places like Sagara and Siddapura which are famous for ancient temples and mountain ranges. The best time to visit Jog Falls will be between June to September when it receives the monsoon season.
The Linganmakki Dam is associated with the Jog Falls waterfall across the Sharavathi River. In the year 0f 1948, the Jog falls housed the largest hydroelectric power station with a capacity of 120 MW which now serves as a small electric power source for the people of Karnataka. Named after the then King of Mysore, this hydro-electric station was named initially as Krishna Rajendra which later was changed to Mahatma Gandhi Hydro-electric Power Project. In the monsoon season, when the Linganmakki Dam is devoid of too much water, the Jog Falls then appear like a thin stream of water cascading down the mountain cliff, which is a sight to behold.
