Jaigarh Fort

#11 of 18 things to do in Jaipur

The ancient city of Amer/Amber has three forts in total- Amer, Nahargarh and Jaigarh. The Jaigarh Fort is located at the highest point of all the three. It is located on the top of a hill called 'Cheel ka Teela'. It overlooks both the forts and provides a panoramic view of the entire city. It is was basically constructed in the year 1726 by Sawai Jai Singh II to protect the Amer fort. This is why one can find a specially dedicated gallery that houses a lot of weaponry from the old times, ranging from bow and arrow to the British-era guns. The fort features a cannon named 'Jaivana' which was manufactured in the fort precincts and was then the world's largest cannon on wheels. It is said that it required dozens of men and elephants to put that cannon to use, but when fired, it could fire up to a large range. When fired for the first time, the cannonball went up to some 45-50 kms and created a big crater. With time, the crater got filled with water and turned into a pond. The pond can be seen from where the cannon is placed today.

There is also a 'bhool-bhulaiya' inside the premises of the fort which was made to confuse the enemy, when attacked. Today a large part of the fort is used to put the ancient things which were used in their places. Like for example, what used to be the kitchen of the fort back in the days, today has a lot of ancient utensils on display and the bedrooms have clothes of the royals with their furniture.

It is an absolute delight to visit the magnanimous Jaigarh Fort as it gives an idea of how the soldiers lived back then during wars, how they prepared for a war and protected their motherland.
