Amber Fort

#10 of 18 things to do in Jaipur

The Amber/ Amer Fort can without an ounce of doubt be declared as the most famous tourist destination of Jaipur! It is grand, exuberant, massive, luxurious, and royalty at its best. It was home to not one but many Rajputana families, including the likes of Jodhabai or Harkabai, the Hindu wife of the great emperor Akbar. Amer is actually an ancient town, having a palace and two forts- Nahargarh Fort and Jaigarh Fort. Built initially for the military troops, it further evolved into a residential palace. It was built by Raja Man Singh I. Made from sandstone primarily, it has insides made of marble.

This majestic palace is laid out on four levels, each with a courtyard. It consists of the Diwan-e-Aam, or "Hall of Public Audience", the Diwan-e-Khas, or "Hall of Private Audience", the Sheesh Mahal (mirror palace), or Jai Mandir, and the Sukh Niwas where a cool climate is artificially created by winds that blow over a water cascade within the palace. Its construction is way ahead of its times. Out of all, the sheesh mahal is the most loved. It overlooks most of the city and surrounded by three levels of boundaries. Within the premises of the palace, there is a beautiful lake named Maota Lake, which is the source of water for the palace.

It has been the favourite shooting location for major historical Bollywood movies which have forts and palaces for decades now. Some of them are Jodhaa Akbar, Bajirao Mastani, Khoobsurat and some movies have some song sequences here. So if lucky, you may even witness the making of a movie here!
There is also a light and sound show available at night which is spectacularly grand and a must watch!
