HISTORY OF IDUKKI
Idukki has a touch of antiquity attached to it. The title Idukki is acquired from "Idukku" which symbolises a 'narrow gorge' in Malayalam. The place is home to Periyar River, which ripples through two bulky rocks in the area, which again has mythological undertones attributed to them. The region was once ruled by the famous Chera Dynasty. The area took a drastic turn when British Colonies took charge of the place. Massive tea and spice production were put into place making it highly valuable in terms of business and commerce. After independence, Idukki became a separate district in 1972.
