Monolith Bull

#17 of 21 things to do in Hampi

Yeduru Basavanna or Nandi marks the east side of the Virupaksha temple in Hampi. This gigantic sculpture of Nandi attracts many visitors who come to admire its sheer size and the craftsmanship of its coarse carving style. It sits on an elevated platform, whose edges are marked by stone columns punctuating the visibility.

Monolithic bull or Nandi, as it is locally known as a subject of great religious faith since it is the mount of Lord Shiva and is also considered to be the gatekeeper of Lord Shiva. Nandi sits facing the Shiva shrine of the Virupaksha Temple that is located on the opposite side of the street. This impressive sculpture is carved out of a single piece of a boulder that has attained its form by chiseling it into shape. Though not intricately carved as any other structure of the temple, it draws everyone's attention with the simplicity and humility that it propogates.
