Marked as one of the highest spots in Hampi, the Matanga Hill is a perfect location to get a picturesque view of Hampi. It is one of the favorite spots for travelers who come to visit and is probably one of the most talked about part of Hampi. The hill is sure to attract your attraction by enticing you with a sunset and sunrise view that will etch a memorable experience. The eastern side of the hill's perimeter leads to the Hampi bus station whereas the northwest path leads you to the Hampi Bazaar. It sits on the banks of the gentle flow of the Tungabhadra river, blessed with the softness that it incorporates to the surrounding landscape. 

There are a couple of paths that lead to the topmost point where the Veerabhadra Temple is located. Both of them of quite different in their approach, catering to the needs of the tourists who come there. One of them is a stepped ramp at the western side and the other one situated slightly to the north is said to be tedious. The ascent itself can take up to 30 minutes but you won't regret the sweat once you reach atop and give in to the exquisite view that exists. Matanga Hill is also blessed with mythological importance. This destination features in the revered legend of Ramayana circling around the story of Vali and Sugriva.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Carry a torch with you. The path that facilitates movement uphill and downhill is not well lit.
  • Visitors are advised against loitering and always stick with your group.
  • Carry drinking water with you.
