Hemakuta Hill Temple Complex

#6 of 21 things to do in Hampi

The Hemakuta Hill Temple Complex consists of a cluster of ancient temples that sit on top of the Hemakuta hill in Hampi. The hill is situated on the southern side of Hampi showcasing a gentle undulating slope from where you can view the splendid sight of the ruins in Hampi. It is also famed to be a splendid site to enjoy the sunrise and sunset as the gentle glow of the sunshine upon the landscape. Like every landmark here, there exists a legend behind the beauty that it propagates. It is believed that Lord Shiva had practiced his penance here and on the occasion of his marriage with Pampa, it rained gold. Thus the hill was named Hema which means gold. This is also the place renowned as the location where Lord Shiva burnt Kama with his third eye. Owing to the faithful reverence of people towards Lord Shiva, the temples in this area is dedicated to Him.

The Hemakuta Hill temples have a distinct style of architecture which differs from that of the other Vijayanagar styles. A lot of the architectural features of this temple complex finds its similarity with the architectural style of Jain temples. They have pyramid-like roofs made from the raw textured granite accompanied with compact triple chambered structures. You can even spot temples built in the Trikutachala temple style on the northern side of the hills. There are three shrines placed perpendicularly to face a common central hall.

However, among the cluster of temples present here, few of them are in good condition and few of them are in ruins. They have suffered the wear and tear of the weather conditions and the Archeological Survey of India is taking a keen interest in renovating them. Though this temple complex stands as a shadow of the glorious past, it is also one of the prime attraction spots for tourists and travelers alike.
