Daroji Bear Sanctuary

#19 of 21 things to do in Hampi

Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary is located in Ballari district of Karnataka and the only place you can spot these honey loving sloth bears. This magnificent expanse of natural landscape for the now slowly receding species of sloth bears, stretches up to an area of 82.7 sq km. Even if the sloth bears form the major attraction here in this sanctuary, you can find other species of animals like jackals, mongoose, wild boars, and even leopards. The topography within the sanctuary is undulating with rough terrain and you can spot these sloth bears in shrub-covered areas. These bears are plenty in number within the premises of the sanctuary and remain hidden in the caves. Most of the areas are covered with sugar canes that are favorable to these sloth bears.

Like any other attraction in Hampi, there is a mythological trail attached with this area. It is believed that in the period of Ramayana, during their journey to Sri Lanka, Lord Rama and his clan were joined by Jambavantha, a bear. This supports the existence of sloth bears even in the age of legends. This sanctuary houses a watchtower from where you can overlook the complete expanse of the scenic view. It is fascinating and gratifying to see the animals living peacefully in their natural habitat. It invokes a realization within you regarding the open-ended thread of civilization that is affecting these species to be spotted only in a handful of such precious ecosystems.

There is also a resort nearby that gives you an opportunity to soak in the rich flora and fauna of the region. You can enjoy bird watching and spend a leisurely time in accordance with your plans for a weekend getaway.
