Big Shivlinga

#12 of 21 things to do in Hampi

Religiously known as Badavilinga, it is believed to be the largest Linga. It is located next to the Laksmi Narasimha statue and a canal runs under it to water the surrounding fields. This means that that the majestic form of the Shiva Linga sits on the graciously flowing water throughout the year. With a closer look at it, you will be able to notice the three eyes of the icon. It is believed that the name Badva, which means poor in local language, is derived from the legend that this Linga was the work of a peasant woman. It is carved out of a single boulder and stands as a testament to the revered Hindu mythologies.
