Haldia is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal. It falls in the Purba Medinipur district. The place has a major river port and an industrial belt and is located at a distance of around 125 km from the capital city of Kolkata. The city is bordered by the Hooghly River, one of the distributaries of River Ganga. The city is not visited a large number of tourists as most of them are drawn towards the capital city of Kolkata, however, with a large number of temples and local markets, it is developing as a major tourist destination of the state. The climate of the place during the summers is hot and humid and the winter temperatures generally range from 7⁰ C to 22⁰C. People visiting Kolkata can take a day off and visit this city which is a mixture of heritage and industrialization. The major attractions of the city are Mahishadal Rajbari and Coplajew Temple, Marine Drive, Sataku, Haldia Dock and Port, Tamluk Rajbari, Muktidham Temple, Balughata Riverside Sunset Point, Administrative Office of Haldia Department Authority, Maynagarh, Matangini’s Statue and Ramjew Temple.

The cuisine in Haldia is mainly Bengali cuisine which is dominated by dishes of rice and fish or meat. Bengalis are extremely fond of fish and this is not a secret to the world. The entire state includes preparations of fishes like rohu, tangra, magur, shingi, katla, ilish and many more, among which ilish is the most preferred and the season of hilsa is celebrated with a lot of “Ilish festivals” being organized throughout the state. The food is generally very spicy and includes spices like kalonji and paanch phoran, which includes a mixture of fennel, cumin, black mustard seeds, fenugreek, etc. The street food of Haldia includes chat, kachori, samosas, and beguni. Puchka and Muri are the most sought after street foods of the state. Bengalis also provide a large number of sweet dishes like Rosogolla, Sondes, Pantua, Rasmalai, Pitha, Chamcham and mishit doi.

Haldia does not have an airport of its own, however, it has a railway station that is not a major station of the state.

How to Reach by Flight

Haldia does not have an airport of its own. The nearest airport is Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport located in Kolkata, at a distance of around 135 km from Haldia.

How to Reach by Train

Haldia Railway Station is located at a distance of around 4 km from the main city and connects the place to other cities like Kolkata, Chennai, and Delhi. However this is not a major station and for frequent trains from other cities, tourists can go to Mecheda or Kolkata or Kharagpur.

How to Reach by Bus

There are bus services available from the city to Kolkata and Kharagpur. New bus services have been started by Haldia Municipality Transport Service which provides air-conditioned buses for tourists.

There are not a lot of options by road to reach Haldia. People can take the buses available or a cab or their cars to reach the city.

Haldia is dominated by Bengali culture an also celebrates many of the Bengali festivals like Rath Yatra. It is celebrated in the month of June-July and is dedicated to Lord Jagannath. Mahishadal is beautifully decorated and becomes colorful during this festival when Jagannath, Balram, and Subhadra are transported to their aunt’s place. Durga Puja is one of the main festivals of Bengalis and it is celebrated with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm. It is a ten-day festival that is celebrated in the month of October. During this time a lot of fairs are organized, there are a variety of food, handicrafts, and games. Vishwakarma Puja is another festival celebrated in the month of September and is dedicated to Lord Vishwakarma, believed to be a lord of tools, weapons, and mechanics. Vasa Utsav is a small festival celebrated in the city of Haldia. It is a literary festival where the poets of the district and other districts of Bengal are recognized.

Haldia Itinerary

Day 1- After reaching Kolkata Airport, leave for Haldia. Then after having breakfast leave for Marine Drive.

Day 2- After having breakfast, leave for the Administrative Office of Haldia Department Authority and Haldia Dock and Port. Then visit Matangini’s Statue, Muktidham Temple and Sataku.
