Chilika Lake is a brackish water lagoon, which is the largest coastal lagoon in India and the second largest coastal lagoon in the world. It spreads over the Puri, Khurda and Ganjam district at the mouth of the Daya River, which flows into the Bay of Bengal. The lake has several species of birds come here from the Caspian Sea, Lake Baikal, Arab Sea and several other places. The lake is home to several rare and threatened species like Green Sea Turtle, Dugong, Spoon billed Sandpiper, Fishing cat etc. The lake also has 726 species of flowering plans. Dolphins are the main attraction of this lake. While taking a boat ride in this lake, tourists get to see dolphins in the water and it is a truly beautiful sight. Nalaban Island falls within the lagoon and was declared to be a bird sanctuary under the Wildlife Protection Act in 1973. The island disappears during the monsson season and ater the monsoon it emerges again.
