At a distance of 500 m from Gokarna Bus Station, Sri Mahabaleshwar Temple is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage centers in South India.A Shiva Linga known as the Atmalinga is worshipped in this Mahabaleshwar temple. The temple was built using white granite and is a great example of Dravidian architecture. Standing majestic, a 1500 years old carved stone Lord Shiva is the main deity. This temple is regarded second only to the Kashi Vishwanatha Temple in Varanasi and is often called the Dakshina Kashi. It is said to be one of the seven sacred Muktikshetras and is visited by Hindus to perform the death rites for their ancestors. The idols of  Chandikeswara, Vinayaka, Dattatreya  and Aadi Gokarneswara are also present here. The Koti thirtha is the most sacred place in the temple. Shivarathri is the main festival that is celebrated here and one must visit the temple during the festival as it is considered auspicious.
