Se Cathedral

#6 of 37 things to do in Goa

Also known as the Sé Catedral de Santa Catarina, this majestic white beauty shrine in Goa is dedicated to Saint Catherine. Situated in Old Goa, opposite to Basilica of Bom Jesus, Se Cathedral is considered to be one of the largest churches in Asia. Se Cathedral is part of UNESCO World Heritage Site (Churches & Convents of Goa). One of the largest churches in the whole of Asia, Se Cathedral took nearly 80 years to get constructed. It was established to remember the victory of the Portuguese over the Muslim rulers of the city. This cathedral has five bells, the most famous among them is the Golden Bell which is the biggest in Goa and one of the biggest in the continent. The Se Cathedral is built in the Portuguese-Gothic style. The exterior of the church is Tuscan while the interior is Corinthian. The tower on the Southern side collapsed in 1776 and it was never built. The adjoining convent has been turned in to an Archeological Museum and is open to the public. The Franciscan church lies to the west of the cathedral. This church is yet another beautiful spot to visit in Goa.
